Walking & Running, The Movement We’re Built For
Walking and running are the most natural movements our bodies are designed to perform.
Long before gyms our ancestors walked and ran as a way of life—exploring, hunting, gathering, and thriving.
Walking and running are primal movements that are still some of the most effective ways to care for our bodies, support our minds, and connect with our Spirit.
Walking is often underestimated in fitness.
It is dismissed as too “easy”, ineffective or for those with limited capabilities.
However, we now know better.
Studies show that walking is a powerful, low-impact exercise that burns fat and supports overall well-being.
Science tells us walking is great for…
Fat Loss: Walking can be more effective than running for fat loss because it keeps your body in a fat-burning zone without overtaxing your system. Walking just 30 min a day is shown to be extremely effective at burning fat.
Blood Sugar Control: A 10- to 15-minute walk after meals significantly reduces blood sugar spikes, supporting metabolic health.
Mental Clarity: Walking outdoors, especially in nature, calms the mind, reduces stress, and enhances creativity.
Joint Health: Unlike higher-impact activities, walking is gentle on your joints while still strengthening muscles and improving circulation.
Running is also a dynamic and empowering movement.
It builds strength, endurance, and confidence, but it doesn’t need to look the same for everyone.
Don’t feel the need to run a marathon to lose weight.
Nor do you need to sprint every day to see results faster.
Science tells us that running is great for…
Cardiovascular Health: Running strengthens your heart and lungs, supporting long-term vitality.
Mood Booster: The endorphins released during a run provide an emotional lift, often referred to as the “runner’s high.”
Strengthens Bones: The impact of running promotes bone density, keeping your body resilient.
A pro-tip from the legendary Coach “Mama Lisa” Felder is trail running.
Running on trails, as opposed to cement, is gentler on your joints and connects you to the natural world.
The uneven terrain strengthens stabilizing muscles, while the beauty of nature offers a meditative experience.
The metaphysics of walking and running is a beautiful harmony between logic and creativity.
Walking and running engages both the left and right side of our brains.
This opens new pathways for intuition and insight into our practical everyday lives.
Please note that not every body is built for the same type of movement.
Some thrive with walking, others love the exhilaration of running, and many enjoy a mix of both.
Your body will guide you if you listen.
If walking feels intuitive and makes you happy, embrace it as your primary movement.
If running calls to you, start small…maybe with a jog through a park or a short trail run.
Remember, we don’t need to sprint or run marathons to be in great shape.
Movement is about consistency and connection, not extremes.
Walking mirrors life’s journey, one step at a time.
It reminds us to stay present and move forward with grace.
Running symbolizes freedom and strength.
It is a chance to let go of what holds us back and push through perceived limits.
Each step (whether slow or fast) is a chance to connect with nature, our breath, and our personal rhythm.
Here are a few practical tips to practice movement alchemy…
Warm Up: Whether walking or running, start with a gentle warm-up to prepare your body.
Set Intentions: Use this time to set positive intentions for your day or reflect on gratitude.
Tune In: Pay attention to your breath, posture, and how your body feels. Let this awareness deepen your connection with your Self.
Mix It Up: Alternate between walking and running to find what feels best for your body. Experiment with trails, parks, and sidewalks.
Rest When Needed: Honor your body’s need for recovery to prevent injury and burnout.
Walking and running remind us that we are designed to move and explore.
This movement is accessible and free.
It holds the power to transform not just our physical fitness, but our mental clarity and spiritual connection.
Whether you choose to walk, run, or a little of both, approach it with intention.
Let it be a celebration of your body’s capability.
Your body was made for this.
Embrace your body one step at a time.
