LEARN THE BASICS

Before the days of #fitspo on Instagram, gym girlies transformed their bodies with tried-and-true foundational lifts. These basic movements build strength and teach you the crucial mind-muscle connection that serves as the foundation for progress. Once you’ve nailed the basics, those flashy exercises you see online will actually work for you.

As a former Certified Trainer and Pro Bodybuilder, these are the essentials I recommend:

  • Lower Body: Squats. Lunges, Push-ups, Deadlifts, Calf raises/press, Leg press, Leg curl.

  • Upper Body: Pull-ups, Bench press, Lat pulldown, Seated row, Military press, Upright rows, Lateral raises, Bicep curls, Triceps push ups and pull downs.

  • Core: Elbow planks, Hand planks, Side planks, Super (wo)mans
