The Energy Transfer of Food
“You are what you eat.”
We’ve all heard this before, but what does that mean?
Well, when we eat spicy food we get hot.
Eating asparagus changes the smell of our urine.
Turkey makes us sleepy.
This is all because of the energy transfer of food.
Let us not forget that a calorie is simply a ‘unit of energy’.
And since we know that energy is not created or destroyed only transfers, we can accept this truth about our food.
Fruits and vegetables contain 100% sun energy - this is the point of photosynthesis.
When we eat those fruits and vegetables we consume about 10% of sun energy.
When we eat animal proteins that are naturally fed, we get about 1% sun energy from that feed, with the vast majority of energy coming from the condition of the animal.
Have we all heard the saying ‘not all calories are created equal’?
This is because quality matters.
Just like 100 calories of apple pie is very different from 100 calories of a natural apple.
The energy of a chicken raised outside in a pasture is different from the energy of a chicken raised in cramped, unsanitary farm conditions.
Processed foods also contain energy.
What kind of energy? It’s hard to say.
Ultra processed foods have never seen the light of day.
Think about this … ultra processed ‘food’ is foreign to the planet and our body.
We are eating merchandise that is manufactured in a lab to look and taste like natural foods.
So, the question isn’t just how many calories are we eating.
The question is WHAT KIND of calories (aka units of energy) are we eating.
How can we feel healthy, vibrant and alive, when we are consuming lifeless products?
The consumption of this unknown energy might have something to do with many of us regularly feeling ‘blah.
Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin sais “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.”
My advice? Don’t make it complicated…just eat like you give a damn.
If it has been raised in the sun, eat it.
If it comes in a bag, box or a can, has a long shelf life or has marketing that actually has to TELL you that it’s healthy, eat it sparingly or not at all.
The best energy is going to come from foods with the least human intervention.
We cannot outdo the good vibes from Mother Nature.
If this is the first time you are hearing this, get excited for all the possibilities natural food provides.
If this is just a reminder, get excited about regaining your vitality and feeling good in your skin again.
Food is one way that our Creator shows us that we are loved and provided for.
The benefits we experience eating from Mother Nature provides proof that we are one.
Let’s honor the mental, emotional, spiritual, social and physical fulfillment thatShe naturally provides.
